Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

“NRS sites have a complex history spanning many decades which has produced many types of records, data and geospatial information. The Site Restoration Programme Geospatial Data Team are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated people who have a good eye for technical detail and a keen interest in working with historical records (physical and scanned), maps and environmental data. Some site-based fieldwork using Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to support land quality site work will be required as part of this role.”
This is a hybrid role, with site based time focused at Harwell (the majority of the team are based at Harwell), with occasional travel to all NRS sites. These sites are based in Scotland, England and Wales.
Key Deliverables
- Handling and digitising a wide variety of data types in GIS (including CAD).
- Providing technical data collection, collation, input and mapping support.
- Liaising with field teams and laboratories for environmental data.
- Using quality assurance checks to ensure GIS datasets produced are of high quality.
- Preparing maps and information to support Site Restoration stakeholder engagement.
- Supporting effective deployment of company-wide policies, processes, systems and procedures to ensure the business remains compliant.
Qualifications & Experience
- You must be qualified to post-secondary level in a relevant subject such as Environmental Science, Geography, GIS, Geology or Nuclear Sciences.
- Demonstrable experience as a GIS operator using ArcGIS Desktop products.
- Essential: good overall IT skills and be comfortable using databases and spreadsheets.
- Essential: good interpersonal skills to maintain good dialogue with NRS project teams.
- Experience of working in the nuclear industry, contaminated land sector or infrastructure management is desirable.
- Willingness to be trained to use the IMAGES land quality database and GNSS (GPS) unit (i.e. for a limited amount of site-based field work which will be required as part of this role).

- The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). For the purpose of assessing an employee’s annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.
