The Role
As a Principal Systems Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is a highly rewarding position working within a market leading defence engineering organisation that will give you the opportunity to develop your skills and experience across a variety of high-profile projects.
Day-to-day, you’ll have an understanding of Uncrewed Systems, Autonomy, ISR and / or CEMA, with experience in systems engineering with respect to system thinking, operational analysis, systems of systems, systems architecture, requirements to support a holistic approach for delivering new technologies into autonomy projects.
This will include working with research and development to identify solutions for opportunities to support growth for this capability within Babcock Mission Systems.
- Take a holistic approach to new projects, responsible for produced all the systems engineering from start of the project to in-service projects and campaigns through the entire bid process.
- Support new concept architecture, design, and installation on a variety of cutting-edge technologies for our clients. Have knowledge in Information Technology, Networks and UAS domains you will provide in depth support across Requirements Elicitation, Architectural Design, Concept Generation, Functional Analysis and Design Integrity.
- Support bid activities for new projects, ensuring the delivery team has the right but proportionate team in place to deliver against the programme’s systems engineering. Including support to getting the right people and tools in place and working with the technical lead to confirm appropriate and timely business cases are presented and approved ahead of time.
- Inform the business on any associated technical risks and provide time frames for engineering lifecycles.
- Developing Engineering Work packages, working with their own team as well as other transversal engineering teams, commercial and supply chain.
- Overseeing the projects permanent and matrix systems engineering team, enabling them to deliver against their area of responsibility, with the ability to support the project team in giving engineering estimates and advice on completion of deliverables of our eco-system suppliers.

This role is full time, 37 hours per week and provides flexible hybrid working arrangements with days onsite and days working from home.
Essential Experience of the Principal Systems Engineer
- Be a ‘systems thinker’, with a positive can do attitude. Be conversant with the standards relating to the Systems Engineering.
- Have understanding in Uncrewed Systems, Autonomy, ISR and / or CEMA.
- Demonstrate a drive to deliver results on time, meeting cost and quality targets, taking ownership of problems / issues whilst working diligently towards a resolution.
- Be proactive and capable of operating with minimal supervision. Be a good communicator, both written and oral, and able to liaise at all levels with customers/stakeholders.
Qualifications for the Principal Systems Engineer
- Degree or equivalent in Engineering. Higher National Certificate and Higher National Diploma with equivalent, relevant experience is valued and welcomed.
