Job description

The Civil Nuclear Security Team plays a critical role in ensuring the security of both existing and planned nuclear sites and the UK's nuclear materials. Our work is vital in ensuring the UK public and international community are confident in the safety and security of our nuclear power, tapping into the heart of both national security and Net Zero agendas.

The security policy unit deals with our policy responses to security threats to the civil nuclear sector. We determine whether we have the right levers in place to manage risks as they arise, and if needed create new policies in response to emerging risks. This role sits within the Threats team but works across the unit on the highest priority projects.

The Threats team manages Economic Security policy, Personnel Security policy, Physical Security policy and the incident response arrangements that underpin each of these. The role will primarily focus on the Economic Security policy area, governance, and will surge other areas as required.

Key responsibilities

One of the main responsibilities will be assessing economic security cases. We screen any significant transactions in the sector that could present national security risks by assessing them against defined criteria and working with other teams and the intelligence agencies to ensure all risks have been properly understood and suitably mitigated.

Another key focus will be on ensuring our Personnel Security policy position is robust enough to mitigate emerging risks. You will need to work with the regulator and industry partners to identify what additional government interventions might be needed.

The role is responsible for managing some of the governance fora that support the security policy team's work. You will need to be comfortable engaging seniors from industry, the regulator and across Government to prepare papers ad keep track of progress against priorities.

Diary management for the Deputy Director might also be a small component of the role.
